Matlock star and Oscar winner Kathy Bates has been named the 2025 Career Achievement Award recipient by the Television Critics Association.
The Television Critics Association announced its annual awards on Wednesday, August 20, and legendary film and TV star Bates has been named as the 2025 Career Achievement Award recipient.
Bates has had a storied Hollywood career. She is a four-time Academy Award nominee — Misery (1990), Primary Colors (1998), About Schmidt (2002) and Richard Jewell (2019) — winning for Misery. Bates has also been nominated for two BAFTAS (Fried Green Tomatoes and Primary Colors), a Tony Award for ‘Night, Mother, and nine Golden Globes, winning for Misery and The Late Shift in 1996. Finally, Bates has been nominated for an impressive 14 Emmy Awards, winning twice — in 2012 for Two and a Half Men and in 2014 for American Horror Story: Coven.

Past winners of the TCA Career Achievement Award include Lucille Ball, Jim Henson, Johnny Carson, Angela Lansbury, Dick Van Dyke, Bob Newhart, Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, Betty White, Oprah Winfrey, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno, Ken Burns, Jean Smart, Ted Danson, Steve Martin, Mel Brooks and Andre Braugher, which was awarded posthumously after Braugher died quite suddenly in December 2023.
