Filming wraps on thriller ‘Followed,’ made by New Mexico talent in Las Cruces

Production has wrapped on “Followed,” a suspenseful short film shot in Las Cruces, that explores the dangers of online exposure and the blurring of the line between virtual threats and real-world consequences.

Directed by Andrew Jara and produced by Sheyla Rico, both New Mexico filmmakers, the film centers on a popular streamer whose live broadcast is hijacked by a stalker. As the digital threat infiltrates her real life, the story explores the illusion of safety in an increasingly online world.

The film stars New Mexico actress Bianca Dumais in her first lead role, alongside Nicolas Check. The production employed more than 20 New Mexico residents, including 20 crew members, two principal actors and one background performer.

“The completion of projects such as ‘Followed’ from our local filmmaking community, particularly those originating from Las Cruces,” Steve Graham, director of the New Mexico Film Office, said in the release. “These short films are integral to our film ecosystem, providing valuable experience to emerging local talent, including skilled crews and promising actors, thereby contributing to the industry’s sustained growth.”

Producer Sheyla Rico said she hopes Followed helps showcase the creative power of southern New Mexico.

“It is a great short that shows the terrifying outcomes that can come from living in a world online,” producer Sheyla Rico said in the release. “I’m excited to bring a production to Las Cruces to show off the talent that Southern New Mexico has to offer.”
