The 28-year-old musician appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with his Favors bandmate, singer-songwriter Ashe, on Tuesday, Sept. 30. As host Fallon, 50, pointed out, love is in the air for the pair.
Ashe, 32, is slated to tie the knot in a few weeks, and the Grammy-winning producer (who also creates music under the name FINNEAS) just announced his engagement to longtime girlfriend Claudia Sulewski — and the experience of proposing, he told Fallon, almost “ate me alive.”
“I mean, I’m very relieved that it happened,” said O’Connell. “I feel like it really taught me that I’m not cut out to rob banks or steal cars or something because I was keeping a joyous, happy secret for several weeks, and it ate me alive.”
“And I was lying in bed at night thinking about where the ring was and her not finding … whatever it was,” he added. “And this is a nice thing that I’m keeping secret.”
O’Connell and Sulewski, 29, got engaged on Monday, Sept. 22 after seven years of dating, and announced the news two days later on Instagram. Alongside photos of their sunset proposal, Sulewski wrote, “Forever and ever 9.22.”

The Favors musician, who is also Billie Eilish‘s brother and frequent collaborator, first met his now-fiancée — a host, actress and founder of CYKLAR skincare — on a dating app in 2018. She quickly became his muse, he later revealed.
Within hours of meeting Sulewski, O’Connell wrote the song “Claudia,” and sent her parts of the song that same night, he told BuzzFeed in 2019. And if the lyrics are any indication, the musician already heard wedding bells in the pair’s future.
“I think you’re gonna change my plans / With those emerald eyes / But you don’t even understand / How much they’re on my mind,” he sings on the track.

In October 2019, the “Till Forever Falls Apart” singer and YouTube star announced that they bought their first house together. A few months later, they announced that they had rescued a pitbull named Peaches.
The couple has also walked several red carpets together over the years, from the 2022 Grammys and the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty to the Barbie premiere’s iconic pink carpet. Sulewski attended the latter to support both her beau and his sister — whom she has a close relationship with — after the sibling duo collaborated on the film’s Grammy-winning song, “What Was I Made For?”
Eilish, 23, also had a sweet reaction to her brother and friend’s engagement news, reposting the couple’s announcement along with the crying emoji and two red hearts. The “Bad Guy” musician also shared a sweet screenshot of a FaceTime call with the happy couple.
