An-1893-tradition, Doc Hinkle egg dye is still filling Easter baskets

Originating in Columbia, Pa. in 1893, Doc Hinkle’s Easter egg dye lives on.

It’s Easter season, which means it’s time to let the kids loose to nab as many eggs as they can.

Here are five options for the family to have some Easter fun.

(Events are listed in chronological order)

Glowtastic Egg Hunt at Des Moines Children’s Museum

The museum is hosting a glow-in-the-dark egg hunt after hours with a few special surprises. All regular exhibits will be open.

Note: All eggs are empty for a candy- and treat-free event. The eggs can be “hunted” as many times as kids would like. Prizes will be available at the front desk for completing the scavenger hunt.

  • When: Friday, April 3 from 6 to 8 p.m., sensory hour from 5 to 6 p.m.
  • Where: 1551 Valley West Drive, Suite 108, West Des Moines
  • Price: $10 ages 1-9, $4 ages 10+, free for infants and members

Super-sized Easter Egg Hunt with NewLife Church

NewLife Church in Pleasant Hill is hosting a scavenger-style egg hunt. Starting in the church’s parking lot, families will follow driving directions to several stops on a route leading to the final hunt at 10:15 a.m. At the end, families will find “surprises with superheroes, a firetruck and more,” according to the event listing. The event is open to kids from birth to fifth grade.

Church members met an “over-the-top” goal for 40,000 eggs for youngsters to hunt. That’s a lot of eggs!

  • When: Saturday, April 4 starting at 9 a.m.
  • Where: 6036 N.E. 12th Ave., Pleasant Hill
  • Price: Free

Egg Palooza at Howell’s Greenhouse and Pumpkin Patch

Howell’s will be hosting a “chaos free” egg hunt with no pushing and shoving. No bucket or bags are needed; they’ll provide an egg carton to collect empty eggs to be redeemed for prizes. Every child will go home with a little something.

Once your kids have finished collecting eggs, you can head to the playground, where activities like the bathtub train, baby goat cuddling and bee lines will be available. The Easter Bunny will also be available for photos.

  • When: Saturday, April 4 starting at 10 a.m.
  • Where: 3145 Howell Ct., Cumming
  • Price: $14 per child plus tax, $10 per adult, tickets are $18 at the gate per person

Easter Egg Scramble at West Lakes Hy-Vee

The West Lakes Hy-Vee will host staggered egg hunts for various age groups. The hunt for ages 1 to 3 will start at 11 a.m., followed by another at 11:20 a.m. for kids ages 4 to 7. For kids ages 8 to 12, the hunt will start at 11:40 a.m.

All eggs include sweet treats and surprises for the whole family.

  • When: Saturday, April 4 starting at 11 a.m.
  • Where: 1725 Jordan Creek Pkwy, West Des Moines
  • Price: Free

Easter Egg Hunt at Wilson’s Orchard and Farms

Egg hunters get to choose their favorite colored basket to collect their eggs in. After the hunt is over, they’ll exchange the basket for a Bunny Box. Find the Golden Egg for an extra special prize!

Kids will also be able to take part in Easter crafts and nibble on sweet treats. They can also be the first to enjoy the Kids Play Barn for the 2026 season.
