Hugh Jackman has played Wolverine, Jean Valjean, and P.T. Barnum.
But his greatest role yet?
Getting murdered so his sheep can solve the case!

Nothing says “serious cinema” like a homicide solved by livestock.
So, here are five reasons why YOU should be absolutely obsessed with “The Sheep Detectives.”

1. THE PREMISE IS ABSOLUTELY UNHINGED — IN THE BEST WAY
We regret to inform you that Hugh Jackman’s shepherd George may not make it very far into this film. Yes, our favorite mutant with adamantium claws might get taken out by farm drama.
But plot twist: his death is what kicks off the entire mystery. Honestly, if you’re going to go, being avenged by a flock of hyper-intelligent sheep is a pretty iconic way to do it.

2. THE SHEEP ARE SMARTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE (INCLUDING US)
Jackman’s character reads detective novels to his sheep every night, assuming they don’t understand. Rookie mistake. Turns out, these wooly little listeners have basically been training for this moment their entire lives.
By the time the crime hits, they’re ready to go full Agatha Christie. Meanwhile, the actual human policeman? Useless. Embarrassing. Probably Googling “how to solve crime” mid-investigation.

3. THE VOICE CAST IS SO STACKED IT’S ALMOST UNREASONABLE
Let’s just run through this slowly so it fully sinks in. Leading the charge is Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Lily, a Shetland sheep who becomes convinced that George’s death was the result of foul play. “Succession” star Nicholas Braun plays a bumbling cop named Tim.
The cast also features Bryan Cranston — yes, Walter White himself — along with Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby, all voicing sheep. And Patrick Stewart, who has commanded starships and led the X-Men, is now a sheep solving a murder mystery.
We have never been more at peace with the universe.

4. THE CREATIVE TEAM BEHIND IT IS SERIOUSLY INTRIGUING
The film was directed by Kyle Balda, best known for directing the first two “Minions” movies, and the screenplay was written by Craig Mazin — the brains behind HBO’s “Chernobyl” and “The Last of Us.” So the guy who made you cry over a fungal apocalypse is now writing jokes for crime-fighting sheep. Talk about range! Respect.
The film is also based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel “Three Bags Full,” which means this has been someone’s passion project for over twenty years. Dreams do come true, people.

5. IT’S BASICALLY “KNIVES OUT” BUT MAKE IT FARMCORE
Between dramatic narration, sheep whispering about murder, and the entire investigation unfolding to Talking Head’s “Psycho Killer,” this movie knows exactly what it’s doing. It’s giving “Knives Out” meets “Babe” with a team ready to pull the wool and crack the case.
Also, somewhere out there a sheep just delivered the line “Our shepherd was murdered” with more conviction than most Oscar nominees. Chills. Actual chills.
“The Sheep Detectives” bleats its way into theaters on May 8, 2026.
