The sequel to Wicked hits theaters this week with Wicked: For Good opening nationwide on Friday. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively, as we continue on their journey through Oz. But how does the musical-turned-movie tie into the original Wizard of Oz?

There is significant overlap between the two, even if we don’t get a lot of Kansas’ own Dorothy Gale in the Wicked series. For one, Dorothy’s faithful friends are all characters that have a role in Wicked. The lion cub that Elphaba and Fiyero save in Wicked becomes the Cowardly Lion (voiced by Colman Domingo), while Boq (Ethan Slater) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) turn into the Tin Man and Scarecrow, respectively.

We get to see Dorothy — played by Bethany Weaver — indirectly a couple times as Glinda sends her down the Yellow Brick Road in Wicked (and doesn’t tell her about the train to the Emerald City) and when dumping water on Elphaba (which was all an elaborate plot to fake her demise).
Wicked and Wicked: For Good are the story of Elphaba and Glinda, but there’s just enough Wizard of Oz adjacent content to tie them together beautifully.
