DETROIT — Former Detroit Tigers outfielder Mark Canha was reinstated from the injured list and then designated for assignment by the Kansas City Royals on Monday.
The Tigers acquired Canha from the Brewers before the 2024 season, assuming his $11.5 million salary. He played regularly at first base, outfielder and designated hitter for the Tigers in 2024, but didn’t hit as much as they hoped. He was traded to the San Francisco Giants at the deadline for minor-league pitcher Eric Silva.
In 93 games with the Tigers, Canha hit .231 with a .687 OPS (97 OPS+) in 377 plate appearances. He had 17 doubles, seven home runs and four stolen bases.
Canha fared better with the Giants but drew limited interest in free agency this winter. He returned to Milwaukee on a minor-league deal and was traded to the Royals just before Opening Day.
Canha, 36, has battled injuries with the Royals and appeared in only 46 games. In 125 plate appearances, he’s hitting .212 with a .537 OPS (52 OPS+).
An 11-year veteran who spent most of his career with the Oakland Athletics, Canha’s options appear limited at this stage of the season. He may have to seek another minor-league deal this winter.
