Fox News anchor Tomi Lahren called on Republicans to pay attention to the message sent by voters this week after Democrats won several major races, including democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani being elected as the next mayor of New York City.
While co-hosting The Big Weekend Show, Lahren discussed the results of the governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia, Mamdani’s victory in New York, and the passing of Proposition 50 in California, a redistricting measure backed by Governor Gavin Newsom.
The segment included clips of Republicans downplaying the results, including House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, who said the outcome was “no surprise” and that “no one should read too much into” the results. It comes as an NFL star failed to impress Donald Trump with his celebration in an awkward moment.
“I think that it’s always a bad idea when Republicans get too cocky,” Lahren said. “I think we’ve done this before, we’ve seen this movie before, the ‘Red Waves’ that were always supposed to crash that never happened.”
She added that the results were not necessarily a “bellwether” for 2026 or 2028, but they were still worth noting. “NYC played itself by electing a socialist,” Lahren said, “but I do think Republicans would be wise to have a wake-up call and realize that we can’t take anything for granted.”
“I think he should be nice to me,” Trump said. “You know, I’m the one who sort of has to approve a lot of things coming to him, so he’s off to a bad start.”
Mamdani’s speech, which went viral on X, featured the mayor-elect highlighting his progressive vision for the city. Some conservatives criticized him for thanking “Yemeni bodega owners” and “Uzbek nurses” while not mentioning “Americans.”
The 34-year-old also reaffirmed his democratic socialist platform, saying, “We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve and no concern too small for it to care about.”
