Free strawberries, music at new Strawberry Festival in Surrey

An inaugural Strawberry Festival promises free strawberries and admission, live entertainment, community celebration and more at a Newton mall.
Fittingly, Strawberry Hill Shopping Centre will host the one-day event Saturday, July 11 in the parking lot off 122 Street, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Festival headliners are Channi Nattan & Inderpal Moga, plus music by Anna Katarina, Vanessa Lefan, Kaya Ko, Bukola and Surrey Jazz Nights artists, along with local vendors and kids’ programming.
The festival producer is Unite Capital Partners, operating partner of the shopping centre, on 35 acres at 72 Avenue and Scott Road, where parking is free and plentiful.
The company expects close to 5,000 people to attend their first-time event, which salutes the strawberry-growing history of the neighbourhood.
“In the early 1900s, Japanese Canadian farming families settled the agricultural uplands of what is now Strawberry Hill and built the region’s strawberry industry,” a company rep says. “The Strawberry Festival is a celebration of that legacy — and of the vibrant, multicultural neighbourhood that carries it forward today.”
