Leonardo DiCaprio is one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, known for his ability to disappear into roles and deliver performances that resonate with audiences and critics alike. From Titanic to The Revenant, his career is a testament to bold choices and a refusal to be typecast. However, with a career so selective, there’s also a fascinating list of blockbuster roles he turned down, many of which went on to define other actors’ careers.
In fact, DiCaprio’s pickiness has been the subject of lighthearted industry chatter. In a recent interview with GQ, his The Quick and the Dead co-star Christian Bale joked that countless actors, including himself, have DiCaprio to thank for some of their most iconic roles.
“To this day, every role someone gets is only because Leonardo turned it down in advance… So thank you, Leo, because literally, he gets to choose everything he does. And good for him, he’s phenomenal,” Bale quipped.

Here are 10 major films Leonardo DiCaprio famously passed on:
Boogie Nights (1997)
Director Paul Thomas Anderson wanted DiCaprio for the role of porn star Dirk Diggler, but Leo chose to work on Titanic instead. The role eventually went to Mark Wahlberg, launching him into leading-man status.
In a recent Esquire profile with Anderson himself, Leonardo DiCaprio admitted this was his biggest career regret. “I’ll say it even though you’re here: my biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights. It was a profound movie of my generation,” he said. “When I finally got to see that movie, I just thought it was a masterpiece. It’s ironic that you’re the person asking that question, but it’s true.”
American Psycho (2000)
DiCaprio was briefly attached to play Patrick Bateman in Mary Harron’s cult classic. After creative differences and scheduling conflicts, he left the project, and Christian Bale took over, delivering one of his most iconic performances.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Before he became a heartthrob, Leonardo DiCaprio was offered the role of Max in Disney’s Halloween hit. He turned it down to focus on What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
Spider-Man (2002)
Director Sam Raimi considered DiCaprio for Peter Parker, but the role went to his close friend Tobey Maguire, kick-starting one of the biggest superhero franchises ever.
Batman Forever (1995)
Leonardo DiCaprio was in talks to play Robin opposite Val Kilmer’s Batman, but declined. Chris O’Donnell eventually donned the cape.
The Matrix (1999)
The Wachowskis reportedly approached Leonardo DiCaprio for Neo, but he turned it down over concerns about heavy visual effects. Keanu Reeves made it a pop-culture milestone.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008)
George Lucas considered Leonardo DiCaprio for Anakin Skywalker in Attack of the Clones, but the actor declined. Hayden Christensen landed the part.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Anthony Minghella’s psychological thriller almost had DiCaprio as Tom Ripley, but the role went to Matt Damon.
Steve Jobs (2015)
Danny Boyle approached Leonardo DiCaprio to play the Apple co-founder, but Michael Fassbender eventually won the part and an Oscar nomination.
The Quick and the Dead (1995)
Although not a rejection, it’s worth noting that DiCaprio’s early career move here almost didn’t happen; he initially passed but later joined the cast alongside Sharon Stone and Russell Crowe.
