Hot 97 will sound very different moving forward, as major shake-ups in their daily schedule included DJ Enuff getting fired. Many people believed Funkmaster Flex may have been behind the 56-year-old DJ being let go, but the audacious personality said otherwise.
“TMZ could never twist me up to flip on my guy, I love him to death,” Flex said during his final 7 p.m. broadcast on Monday evening (Sept. 1) before he moves to the 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. block. Initially, due to the phrasing of his announcement, people thought Flex was leaving the popular NYC radio station, but it was merely one of multiple shift changes that came with one shocking casualty in Enuff being dropped. Nonetheless, the 57-year-old DJ asserted that he would not need to work against anyone else due to his status.
“I would never have anything to do—not just my brother. I would have nothing to do with anyone being fired or no longer here. You know why? I’m too hot,” he added. “Why would I be worried about anybody in here? Why would I feel that anybody should not be here? I don’t believe in that. I don’t influence that. I don’t need to. I like to grind. Listen, he grinds too. Everybody grinds.”
The Bronx producer continued by saying that Enuff and others should be more focused on the people he believes are in his corner, but may have actually been sneakily conspiring against him. “The people who snaked you, man, was in that video on your goodbye. The people who snaked you were standing outside when you was with TMZ,” Flex said. “They were standing with you, my brother. You go back to that video and you really look at their faces.”
The people in the TMZ video were Enuff’s wife, plus his former co-workers DJ Drewski, DJ E-Stylez, and DJ Lady S. Enuff cried when being interviewed and stated his belief that Flex may have been responsible for his firing. Notably, Drewski was given a new DJ shift on the station, taking over the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. slot. Nonetheless, Flex doubled down on giving Enuff his flowers and highlighting how he changed the game within his 27-year run.
“He is the originator of putting the line at those Spanish clubs around the block. There would be no Spanish hip-hop parties without DJ Enuff,” Flex stated. “He is the originator of it. He’s the originator of doing two or three bookings a night, moving around, doing his thing. Somewhere between there and now that was no longer there for him.”
