Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Passis perhaps the summer’s most absurd comedy. It is also the summer’s only movie to include PEOPLE as a major part of a character’s backstory.
In the new film from longtime collaborators David Wain and Ken Marino (Wet Hot American Summer), Marino, 57, introduces himself to Zoey Deutch‘s title character as a once-successful PEOPLE photographer.
The movie follows a Midwestern bride-to-be’s efforts to hook up with Jon Hamm in order to use her celebrity “hall pass,” as it were, and it turns out that Marino’s Vincent has long yearned to snap a photo of the Mad Men star.

Vincent’s backstory brought about a significant PEOPLE-themed moment for the movie, which writer-director Wain, 56, says was “so much fun” to create at the movie’s June 23 premiere in Los Angeles.
“So we had a very, very low budget,” he said. “Our incredible production designer, Justin Lieb, put together the ‘70s People magazine offices, even though we were saying it’s 2007, and we just had a lot of fun mocking up old covers and stuff like that.”
“I think we got some sort of approval. We definitely were not allowed to use any actual photos or covers or anything, so we had to create fictional ones for all of that,” he adds. “And we had a lot of fun because there’s a whole sequence where Ken Marino’s character shows all the different articles he did, and so we had fun creating those graphics. I did a lot of them.”
Marino and Deutch, 31, costar in Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass with Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang, Tobie Windham, Sabrina Impacciatore, Joe Lo Truglio, Fred Melamed and more. Hamm, 55, and John Slattery appear in the movie as themselves, along with a number of additional celebrity cameos.
At the movie’s Tribeca Film Festival premiere back on June 10, Marino joked to PEOPLE that Hollywood was waiting for him to take on the part of a former PEOPLE employee. “Listen, I know the world has been clamoring for Ken Marino to play a People magazine paparazzi guy,” he jests.

Hamm and Slattery are no strangers to Wain and Marino’s goofy comedies. Hamm previously starred in Wain’s 2007 comedy The Ten, while both he and Slattery appeared in the 2015 Netflix prequel series Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, which debuted the same year Mad Men wrapped its seven-season run.
“I always think it’s so fun to have an actor playing themselves, and you tweak a couple things [about their personality],” Wain says. “I remember that at first from Being John Malkovich, and Jon is so funny and such an appreciator of comedy, and a friend and someone I’ve worked with in the past, so it’s sort of the perfect thing. I feel like he and Slattery both relished coming in and riffing on who they are.”
