RALEIGH, N.C. — An annual convention brought together actors, artists, entertainers and fans in downtown Raleigh.
GalaxyCon Raleigh, a four-day “festival of fandom,” took place at the Raleigh Convention Center from Thursday through Sunday.
“We’ve been here pretty much from start of the con to just about after hours,” said Christoper Headley, who was attending the convention for the first time this past weekend.
He and his wife, who made the trip from Myrtle Beach, are not alone in packing their weekend schedule with the convention’s events.
Over the span of four days, tens of thousands of people attended and shared their love for things all things comic books, anime, pop culture and cosplay.
“It’s a great way to meet people that you wouldn’t know like it,” Lindsey Dix said. “I grew up in a small area with people who didn’t know what I liked or thought it was weird. Then being here, coming around people who loved it, it was like ‘oh wow, there are people who also like the same things I do, I’m not that weird, actually.’”
Dix, who lives in Greensboro, has been attending GalaxyCon Raleigh for the past decade.
One of her favorite things about about the convention, year after year, is meeting new people.
“I make new friends here all the time. I meet people I love here,” she said. “We get to meet celebrities or friends I don’t get to see that often that I can only meet a cons — it’s so nice to see them while I’m here.”
While there’s lots of people to meet and things to do, there’s also lots of costumes to see.
Dix says she spent seven months working on hers.
“From pattering, picking out fabrics, dying lace, beadwork and embroidery — it’s a lot of fun and being able to be here and show off my work is amazing for me,” Dix said.
Headley says this is one of the best conventions he’s ever been to.
“The whole experience has been amazing,” Headley said. “The costumes have been great. The staff has been amazing. The entire convention center has just been brilliant in helping us navigate.”
GalaxyCon is being hosted in eight cities across the country this year. The Raleigh show is the organization’s largest.
