There just aren’t many places doing holiday music as well as New Orleans and South Louisiana. From swing bands, Cajun musicians and Americana singer-songwriters to bounce and hip-hop artists, the area’s musicians seem to love putting their spin on holiday classics — or outright creating new songs sure to become New Orleans Yuletide staples.
Now that we’re past Thanksgiving, it’s time to start up the holiday tunes, get into the seasonal spirit and prepare for the inevitable rush of family gatherings, dinners with friends and tacky sweater parties. To help, Gambit put together a playlist of great holiday music by New Orleans artists, from bounce to funk, brass bands and indie rock. Check it out below and on Spotify.
Look out for new music from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which recently released the full-length record “Preservation Hall Wishes You a Very Merry Creole Christmas,” and Swinging in New Orleans‘ new album “The Holiday Session.” Singer-songwriters Tiago Guy and Renée Gros have a fun, new track called “(Santa Ran the Light) on Claiborne.” And there are recently made songs by Handmade Moments and the spooky-themed, lo-fi beatmakers at Haunted House Party.
Also new this year: Strange Daisy Records has a new Christmas compilation out Friday, Dec. 5, featuring some of the city’s best indie rock and punk bands. The 19-track “A Strange Daisy Christmas” includes covers and originals by Kelly Duplex, The Self-Help Tapes, Loucey, Community, Brucey, Butte, Laura Fisher, Claire Givens, Silver Godling, The World is a Vampire and more. The album can be found at strangedaisy.bandcamp.com, and a portion of the proceeds of the album will go to Second Harvest Food Bank, Toups’ Family Meal, Giving Hope NOLA and For the Love Of.
And the Imagination Movers have a new EP, “Christmas Mischief” also dropping on Dec. 5. The four-track collection includes “Deck the Halls” and “Rudolph,” a cover of “Christmas for Cowboys” and a new holiday tune by the Movers. Find it at imaginationmovers.bandcamp.com.
