George Clooney’s wife Amal reveals how her life changed after marriage

Amal Clooney’s whole life changed when she got married.

The international law and human rights lawyer, 48, opened up about navigating the “weirdness” that came with being wed to George Clooney at a June 9 panel for Cartier Dialogues.

“I have to say for me it was a weird phenomenon because I used to have my work life and my personal life, and they could look quite different and I was able to not have them mix. And then I got married and that changed quite a lot,” she said.

The couple wed in September 2014, a year after they were introduced by a mutual friend. They welcomed fraternal twins, Alexander and Ella, in 2017.

“And at first, I was kind of conscious of that one-dimensional view, where I didn’t, I felt like, ‘Well, I can’t be seen wearing this dress or doing this because I’m in front of a judge on Monday and I don’t want the judge … But it just doesn’t matter as much as living your life and ultimately, if you’re good at what you do, that is going to shine through or not.”

She continued, “I wouldn’t allow that factor to stop me from doing things that were important for my family, or for my relationship, but it was easier when I could decide what kind of exposure I got. And it was just something new to navigate.”

Amal Clooney reaps the benefits of both worlds, practicing law and championing causes important to her through Clooney Foundation for Justice, which she co-founded with her husband in late 2016, all the while attending the occasional movie premiere or award show with her husband.

The Clooneys strive for normalcy

The couple is intent in raising their children as normally as possible, sharing in previous interviews the lengths they have gone to ensure normalcy. In an October 2025 interview with People, the “Ocean’s Eleven” star revealed that he and Amal have cut back on traveling to “dangerous” places since becoming parents.

“You can’t just go swinging as you used to,” Clooney told the outlet. “Amal and I both had to change our goals on where we would go. I used to enjoy going to places that were dangerous. I liked going into the Nuba Mountains and Darfur and Abyei, and there (were) war zones.”

The Clooneys have also been open about the steps they’ve taken to protect their family, as they’ve had difficulty maintaining a degree of privacy. In addition to keeping photos of her children private, Amal also collects guests’ cell phones and keep them in a “phone basket” when entertaining at home.

“It’s important to get that balance where you have time alone with your family and with your friends where people feel like you can have a safe and frank exchange,” she told Glamour.

The family relocated to France in 2021 in an effort to give the twins a “fair shake at life” away from Hollywood, and were granted French citizenship in 2025.

“I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids,” George, who grew up on a Kentucky farm, told Esquire in an October profile.
