Game of Thrones fans, winter will indeed come once again – and then again. The Game of Thrones universe is expanding far beyond the existing House of the Dragon, the anticipated A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (releasing January 18, 2026), and a few other known spin-offs that are still in work. This confirmation comes straight from the horse’s mouth – George R. R. Martin.
At the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, Martin shared the exciting news that not only multiple prequels but also several sequels are in development (via Los Siete Reinos).
“Apart from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms & House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in development,” Martin said. “The majority are prequels, and there are several in development – maybe 5 or 6 shows. And I’m not developing them alone, I’m working on them with other people. And yes, there’s a sequel or two [in the works].”
Sadly, Martin didn’t divulge the who, what, and when of these projects, leaving fans guessing. With announcements and quick cancellations, it has undoubtedly become increasingly hard to keep track of what’s exactly happening in the Game of Thrones universe. However, as of now, Aegon’s Conquest and Ten Thousand Ships are the only known projects actively in development, while The Sea Snake and The Golden Empireare are probably still in development with no recent updates yet.
House of the Dragon is slated for release sometime in the summer of 2026 and has been renewed early for season 4.
