Giada De Laurentiis had a sweet reaction to her daughter, Jade, following in her culinary footsteps.
“Jade told me to open Instagram yesterday, and surprised me with a video of her cooking dinner while I was out of town,” the former Food Network star captioned a Wednesday, July 1, Instagram video. “YES we have some work to do before she goes to college, but this made my year…. Proud mom. Enjoy.”
In the clip, De Laurentiis stated, “I want to share this video with you guys, ‘cause it was completely unsolicited, and it was a huge, proud mamma moment: Jade making one of my sauces. I don’t know. It just, it made my year. It’s so cute, it’s so cute. You guys are gonna love it. But [it’s] definitely time to teach Jade a few things before she goes to college.”
De Laurentiis’s post also featured Jade’s cooking video, which she shared on Instagram on Tuesday, June 30. In the video, Jade explained that she was cooking dinner for herself and De Laurentiis’ boyfriend, Shane Farley, while her mom was out of town for her Sorella by Giada restaurant opening in Chicago.
Jade began prepping the pasta dish by peeling and chopping garlic. “I don’t know how to do this! I need my mom,” she quipped. “I just put the water on, but I gotta put the salt in. If you’re a fan of my mom, you know it’s the most important, salt.”

One thing Jade said she has learned from her mother’s years of cooking is that you “always put olive oil on the pan first,” so she did just that before pouring in the pasta sauce. “So many things happening. How does my mom do this?” she stated, going on to add tomatoes, salt, and pepper into the sauce. “I think it’s really awesome that cooking comes so easily to some people. I’m just not one of those people.”
While Jade questioned how much salt she added to the dish, she was ultimately pleased with the end result. “OK. It’s actually not that bad. It’s salty. It doesn’t give tomato sauce. It kind of gives a little bit of a burnt flavor but like in a cute way,” she said. “Honestly, OK, it’s edible, and it’s not terrible. I’ll take it.”
Fans reacted to Jade’s cooking skills in the post’s comments, with one user writing, “This was so entertaining to watch as a professional and as a mom of young adults. You’re doing great. And at least you used real garlic lol.” Another added, “Oh I was so worried from her she is gonna chop her fingers off.” Someone else shared, “My fave part was ‘it gives a little bit of a burnt flavor, but in a cute way.’”
Underneath De Laurentiis’ post, a different person wrote, “When all else fails… add butter! This was the cutest but where was she all these years with you and Aunt Raffy in the kitchen?!?” A separate commenter stated, “This is so cute but I so anxious about her hair catching fire on that open stovetop. Mamma Mia.” Somebody else shared, “This is so cute and very normal for a young person trying to cook. She will be just fine. Getting it wrong is on the way to learning how to do it right.”
De Laurentiis shares Jade with her ex-husband, Todd Thompson. The former couple recently reunited for Jade’s high school graduation last month. “She did it! What an unbelievable milestone for our girl, our world changer, our graduate,” she captioned Instagram pics from the graduation ceremony on May 29, including a family of herself and Thompson with Jade. “Keep shining Jadey, we love you more than you will ever know.”
