OXFORD — Fans of the television series Gilmore Girls are invited to immerse themselves in a Stars Hollow-inspired experience as a new festival, the Firefly Festival, is set to debut in Oxford on Oct. 25. The event, spearheaded by local businesses Southern Girl Coffee, Events at Onyx and Opal, and Madi Lou’s, promises an afternoon and evening filled with live music, unique vendors, and screenings of classic Gilmore Girls episodes.
Leah Cleghorn of Southern Girl Coffee, Christy Fleming of Madi Lou’s and Weston Gray of Events at Onyx and Opal have collaborated to expand upon Southern Girl’s popular annual Gilmore Girls Night.
“Christy and I were talking, and I was trying to plan a date for our Gilmore Girls Night,” Cleghorn explained. “She said, ‘What if we made it into a festival?’”
The Firefly Festival will run from noon to 8 p.m. From noon to 6 p.m., attendees can enjoy live music and browse a curated selection of vendors.
“We want one of each vendor type. We don’t want to overlap on the vendors,” Cleghorn said, highlighting the unique offerings, such as handcrafted jewelry from Julie Mangham of Sweet Rock Metal Shop and permanent jewelry or a charm bar from Madi Lou’s.
Weston Gray, an event stylist and florist, is focused on bringing the aesthetic of Stars Hollow to life.
“My goal in the festival itself is just pretty much to curate that whole event and style to be very Gilmore Girls,” Gray stated.
The name “Firefly Festival” is a playful nod to a similar event in the show, with a slight twist.
“We had called it the Firefly Festival, and we just ran with it,” Fleming said, acknowledging the inspiration from the “Fire Light Festival” in the series. The timing also coincides with the 25th anniversary of Gilmore Girls, a milestone being celebrated by various brands.
While the festival is primarily geared towards a teenage to mid-50s audience, families with younger children can find activities nearby. A local church will host a Fall Fest concurrently from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in an adjacent parking lot, offering kid-focused activities.
The event will transition from vendors and music to Gilmore Girls episode screenings from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with three episodes selected for viewing. Vendors are welcome to stay open through the show if they wish.
