GIRLSET discusses new single “Tweak,” working with Missy Elliott and the group’s iconic covers of classic pop songs.
Tetris Kelly: This is Tetris hanging out with GIRLSET talking about this single that’s about to come, “Tweak.” How are you doing, ladies?
GIRLSET: Good!
OK, I gotta say, starting the track right away with the SWV sample. I was already ready to get in there, so tell me how you arrived at using that sample in kind of this word play with “Tweak” and “Weak.”
Camila Ribeaux Valdes: I mean, I think we didn’t really know that the sample was going to be used, but when we first heard the song, it was like, obviously the intro of the song, and that was like-
Savanna Collins: Really catching, yeah. Like, immediately.
Camila Ribeaux Valdes: Did not expect that, but we’re like, “No way that’s like, so iconic.” So I feel like it’s really an honor to be able to have a little bit of that iconic song in our song, and it kind of sets the tone, I feel like for “Tweak,” it’s like a twist. “Weak” and “Tweak,” it’s kind of like the opposite, I would say, in terms of like meaning, it really ties in together.
And talk about the meaning of the song. I mean, you guys obviously recently re-debuted. So tell me about the sound you wanted to create and what the meaning of the song is.
Lexus Vang: Yeah. I mean, it’s really about like standing your ground, as we say, a stupid boy anthem, someone who keeps pushing your boundaries, your limits. It’s also an emotional song, but maybe in the opposite way. And we loved enhancing the emotional aspect, but in a way where it’s kind of like standing on business, but also being real with yourself. Being real with yourself, keeping yourself in check. And like, the title says “Tweak.”
