Tejano musician Omar Cardenas, a Grammy Award-nominated bassist best known for his work with The Cardenas Project and La Diferenzia has died.
“With heavy hearts, the Cardenas Family shares the passing of our beloved Omar — a father, grandfather, brother, son and lifelong musician whose love for music and family touched everyone around him,” a statement on The Cardenas Project’s Facebook page said. “His rhythm will forever live on in our hearts.”
The statement did not provide his age nor a cause of death.
According to a GoFundMe put together to cover funeral costs, Cardenas played bass alongside his brothers in various Tejano bands in the Midwest and Texas.
La Diferenzia‘s self-titled debut album in 1994 earned a Grammy nomination for Best Mexican-American Performance. In addition to Cardenas, the band also consisted of singer-songwriter Ricardo Castillon and his brother Ramiro, Miguel Spindola, Raul Arnold, Simon Arausa, Jesse Moya, and Jose Luis Benavides.
“His music connected people, filled dance floors, and became part of countless memories for those lucky enough to hear him play,” the GoFundMe said. “Omar’s journey wasn’t always easy, but it was real. He lived life with intensity — full of stories, laughter, and moments that left an impression on everyone who crossed his path.”
“We want to give Omar the farewell he deserves — one that honors him and his legacy,” the post continued. “Every donation will go directly toward giving Omar a dignified and heartfelt goodbye.”
