Grease costars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John — who first met on the set of the 1978 hit and remained friends until the latter died in 2022 — almost had an off-screen romance, according to a friend.
For his new Olivia Newton-John biography, A Little More Love, author Matthew Hild dug through old interviews and spoke to friends and colleagues who were once close to the actress to know what was actually going on behind the scenes.
Speaking of the “rumored” almost-romance, Hild recently told People, “I don’t quite have the smoking gun, but I think the preponderance of evidence is pretty darn suggestive.”

In his book, Hild writes, “In 2018, Didi Conn, who played Frenchy in Grease, told journalist Stephanie Nolasco that she thought that Travolta had been genuinely attracted to Olivia and that the chemistry between the two in the movie was real.”
“Recalling an alternate ending that was filmed for the movie, when Danny and Sandy engaged in a ‘juicy’ kiss, Conn said, ‘They weren’t acting at that moment… it was real, it really was,’” the book reads.
Hild mentions another witness, whose name remains undisclosed, to the young actors’ near-romance, writing, “More than 20 years after Grease was filmed, a musician who had been married to a Scientologist joined Olivia’s band and became friends with her. He says that Olivia and Travolta ‘were very, very close. Almost that close.’”

According to the book, the said musician also told Hild about a conversation Newton-John had with him. She apparently asked the singer a “personal question” because his wife was a Scientologist as well.
The question was, as Hild writes: “If I had married John, would he have expected me to become a Scientologist?”
The answer Newton-John’s bandmate had was: “It would not have been mandatory, but it would have been encouraged, put it that way.”
The duo worked on multiple projects over the years, including the 1983 hit Two of a Kind. Travolta paid his tribute to Newton-John when she died from b****** cancer at the age of 73, writing on Instagram, “My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible.”
In her memoir, Olivia Newton-John admitted that she and John Travolta ‘really liked each other.’ MEGA
“I love you so much. We will see you down the road, and we will all be together again. Yours from the moment I saw you and forever! Your Danny, your John,” he concluded.
Newton-John herself had written about the intense attraction she felt for Travolta, and vice versa, in her 2019 memoir, Don’t Stop Believin‘.
“We really liked each other and there was an attraction, but we would never date because we were both involved with other people at the time and both of us have a loyalty streak that runs deep,” she revealed.
She also wrote about the two wanting to “cross the line,” noting, “It almost happened between us a few times, but it didn’t. Sometimes life just offers you the wrong timing. We had to leave it as dear friends.”
