The Guelph Royals baseball team is for sale.
The news comes just days after the Intercounty Baseball League announced it is becoming the Canadian Baseball League and switching from being semi-pro to professional.
No one from the team responded when CBC News asked about the changes to the league.
The sale of the team is described as a “rare opportunity” in a media release.
“The Guelph Royals, a pillar of Canadian sport since the 1800s, is now available for new ownership, offering a generational opportunity to lead a team built on heritage, pride, and enduring community support,” the release said.
The team is currently owned by Shawn Fuller, said in the release that owning the team ” has been an incredible honour.”
“This club has history, heart, and a loyal following. It’s time to find the next person to carry that legacy forward,” he said. The release doesn’t give any other reasons for the sale.
The Guelph Royals folded in June 2017 after the ownership at the time said they had poor ticket sales and missed that season of baseball. The team was back with new owners, including current owner Shawn Fuller, in 2018.
The team made it to the Intercounty Baseball League championships in 2024.
David Schooley, the broker representing the sale and who is also involved in the Waterloo Region Sports and Entertainment which owns the Kitchener Panthers baseball team, said in the release that “sports ownership is about emotion as much as enterprise.”
“It’s the sound of the crowd, the energy of game day, and the pride of seeing your team’s colours fill the stands,” Schooley said.
“Ownership at this level is where passion meets prestige. The right owner will see the Royals not just as a team, but as a platform for influence, visibility, and community leadership.”
People who want to buy the team should express interest to Schooley, then qualified candidates will be asked to submit formal proposals.
Any sale will need to be approved by the Canadian Baseball League.
