Gwyneth Paltrow’s critics found her recent comments about the “super rich” hypocritical.
On Tuesday, May 5, the Marty Supreme actress, 53, invited business journalist Kara Swisher on her lifestyle brand goop’s podcast to discuss the ever-changing tech industry, including the growing presence of AI and where politics come into play.
During the chat, she made a “tone deaf” comment that has some fans turning against her, just months after coming under fire for another “dangerous” claim made on her podcast. The controversial statement came during a discussion of America’s tech moguls, like Mark Zuckerberg. Gwyneth began questioning, “How did we get here as a culture?”
She continued, “Obviously, there’s so much revenue and profit driving this whole thing, that’s at the heart of it, but how do you think we got to this place in culture where nothing matters and now all that matters is kind of these super-rich white dudes who are breaking rules, setting rules, seemingly not caring so much about the downstream impact on everything.”
After Kara responded, highlighting “an idolatry of wealth,” Gwyneth said, “I feel like there’s something so endemic to being an American about this idea that anybody can do it from whatever socioeconomic background, but we put this hierarchy.”
“It’s like we’re so hungry for a hierarchy to make sense of our lives or something like that. And we imbue these guys with this extraordinary,” she added.
As the journalist continued the conversation, many viewers rushed to the comment section to slam the actress, with one YouTube user saying, “Super rich white dudes? Coming from Paltrow that is kinda funny.”
Another added, “I can appreciate the question and putting thought toward this, but also your brand is based on luxury and excessive wealth.”
A third asked, “Super white rich dudes?! What does Goop charge for makeup?”
Her wellness and lifestyle brand is positioned as high-end, with beauty products priced between $35 and $150.
Since its launch in 2008, the company has reached a valuation of over $433 million. Gwyneth retains a substantial stake, with reports suggesting it is worth approximately $75 million.
Along with her own luxury brand, she has acted as a spokesperson for companies like Estée Lauder and Coach.
Gwyneth’s overall net worth is estimated to be approximately $200 million, which includes all the earnings she received in Hollywood since making her acting debut in the 1989 movie High. The actress reportedly earned her highest salary, $10 million, from the 2003 film View from the Top.
She has also built a substantial real estate portfolio, which includes the $22 million Los Angeles home she sold in January 2025.
