Just days after a federal judge ordered President Donald Trump‘s name removed from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Rob Shuter‘s Naughty But Nice Substack reported on Tuesday, June 2 that a number of high-profile performers and organizations are quietly exploring a return to the iconic venue.
And topping that list, insiders told Shuter, is Hamilton.
The groundbreaking Lin-Manuel Miranda musical had been among the most high-profile acts to cancel a planned Kennedy Center engagement after Trump’s allies took over its leadership, added his name to the building and announced a two-year closure for renovations.
The decision sparked swift backlash across the arts community. Now, with U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper‘s May 29 ruling temporarily blocking the closure and ordering all Trump signage removed within two weeks, the temperature appears to be shifting.

“Hamilton would be the ultimate comeback,” an insider told Shuter. “It was the most high-profile withdrawal, and everyone knows what a return would symbolize.”
Beyond Hamilton, names circulating in the conversation per the report include Miranda, 46, writer-producer Issa Rae, 41, and folk musician Rhiannon Giddens, 49, along with several arts organizations that had previously pulled scheduled bookings.
“A lot of artists never had a problem with the Kennedy Center itself,” the source told Naughty But Nice. “Their issue was what it represented now under President Trump.”

Whether any official announcements follow remains to be seen. The administration has yet to comply with the judge’s order — Interior Secretary Doug Burgum declined to confirm the name would be removed, suggesting the legal battle is far from settled. Still, those with knowledge of the situation say the mood in the entertainment community is one of cautious optimism.
“There’s genuine interest in coming back. Many artists feel the Kennedy Center belongs to performers and audiences — not politicians,” another source told Shuter.
