ABBA‘s “Happy New Year” is one of the group’s most reflective and emotional songs, resurfacing around the world every January.

The song was originally released in December 1980 as part of their album Super Trouper, and originally had a limited single release. It has since grown to get a second life as an unofficial New Year’s Eve anthem with its bittersweet tone and message about looking ahead.
Here’s the lyrics to the chorus: “Happy New Year, Happy New Year / May we all have a vision now and then / Of a world where every neighbor is a friend / Happy New Year, Happy New Year / May we all have our hopes, our will to try / If we don’t, we might as well lay down and die / You and I.”
The song reportedly had a very interesting working title (“Daddy, Don’t Get Drunk on Christmas Day”), and even has an accompanying Spanish language version, “Felicidad,” which became a hit in parts of South America upon its release.
The English version was also re-released in 1999, and again in 2008, charting across Europe. More than four decades later, it’s become a seasonal staple.
