It’s no secret that Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have had a strained relationship with the rest of the royals—namely, Harry’s father King Charles, stepmother Queen Camilla, brother Prince William, and his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales. There’s also been some major to-do about whether or not it would ever be safe for Meghan and the children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to visit the UK again over security concerns.
Now, judging by Meghan’s latest Instagram post, it appears that the Sussexes did in fact take a recent family trip to the UK, as well as spending a stint in Portugal, and in choosing to visit Princess Diana’s old childhood home, Althorp House, they sent a subtle signal out to the rest of their relatives.
The images showed Archie walking barefoot through the grounds in one photo, along with Lili, Harry, and Archie walking elsewhere on the estate together in another. The Duchess captioned the collection of photos, “Summer Holiday ☀️.”
Althorp House is owned by Diana’s brother, Harry’s uncle, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer—a side of the family it appears Meghan and Harry are keen to align themselves with.
Earl Spencer, along with Diana’s sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, have remained a visible presence in Harry’s life in recent years, with Lady Sarah and Lady Jane also attending Princess Lilibet’s christening in California.
Against that backdrop, introducing Archie and Lilibet to Diana’s childhood home can be seen as another example of Harry strengthening his children’s connection to their Spencer heritage at a time when his relationship with the House of Windsor remains severely on the rocks.
Here’s hoping that when the Sussexes next visit, they may have a chance to reconcile with their other family members.
