Nicolas Cage in talks to join True Detective Season 5’s cast
Deadline reported that Nicolas Cage is in talks for the lead role of Henry Logan, a New York detective at the center of the season’s case. Variety confirmed the new installment will take place in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City. HBO declined to comment on the negotiations.
Season 5 will follow True Detective: Night Country, which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis and became the most-watched season of the anthology. Foster won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her performance.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Films, previously confirmed that Issa López would return as showrunner. Orsi said, “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful” (via Deadline).
Talks with Cage have been ongoing since early summer, with The Hollywood Reporter noting that discussions began months ago. Production on the season is scheduled to start in 2026, with a planned 2027 premiere.
López told the celebrity.land in December that there would be “important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season]. That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything.”
Cage would take on his second major television lead with True Detective. He will headline Amazon’s Spider-Noir, a live-action series slated to debut in 2026. Cage won an Academy Award for Leaving Las Vegas and earned a nomination for Adaptation. He recently appeared in Pig, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Dream Scenario, Renfield, and Longlegs.
The first season of True Detective starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, with later seasons featuring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Foster.
