High-profile figures from the worlds of entertainment and politics are mourning the death of actor-director Rob Reiner, who was discovered dead — alongside his wife Michele — at their Los Angeles home on Sunday.
Former President Barack Obama said in a statement shared on X that “beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people — and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action” and that the couple’s lives were “defined by purpose.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) hailed Reiner in a statement as “the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love” whose “boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others — and encouraging us to dream bigger. That empathy extended well beyond his films.”
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said it was “hard to think of anyone more remarkable and excellent in every field and endeavor they pursued.” Read Pelosi’s full comments here:
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and actors Elijah Wood, James Woods, John Cusack, Eric Idle and Ben Stiller also paid their respects in online posts.
