Warner Bros. Animation offered fans a first glimpse at Hello Kitty’s long-awaited Hollywood debut through an official release update shared online. The announcement appeared alongside other upcoming titles from the studio. It confirmed that the globally recognized character will make her theatrical premiere in summer 2028.

Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have officially set July 21, 2028, as the release date for Hello Kitty. The movie marks the beloved Sanrio character’s first-ever Hollywood feature film.
The studio confirmed the news on Instagram, writing, “Hello Hollywood #HelloKittyMovie is coming to theaters July 21, 2028!”
According to a statement from Warner Bros., the film “marks Hello Kitty’s Hollywood theatrical debut as Hello Kitty and her friends embark on a cinematic adventure sure to delight audiences of all ages.” The project has been in development for several years. New Line acquired the film rights from Sanrio in 2019, marking the first time the Japanese company licensed its characters for a major motion picture.
Director Leo Matsuda, best known for Disney’s Inner Workings, leads the Hello Kitty movie. Dana Fox, writer of Wicked, wrote the script. Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. produces the film after nearly a decade of securing rights from Sanrio founder Shintaro Tsuji. Shelby Thomas oversees production for FlynnPictureCo., following the company’s recent work on Disney’s live-action Moana, which arrives in July 2026.
Sanrio introduced Hello Kitty in 1974 and quickly turned her into a global merchandising icon. The brand expanded into themed cafés, amusement parks, and video games. The entertainment company also licensed other characters such as My Melody, Gudetama, and Little Twin Stars, leading to speculation about their roles in the upcoming movie.
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and New Line Cinema are producing the animated feature, planned as one of the studio’s major summer releases for 2028.
