Here’s When Brad Pitt’s ‘F1’ Will Be Available to Stream

For a movie about fast cars, F1 was somewhat slow to hit streaming. The movie, which stars Brad Pitt as a veteran driver who returns to Formula One racing, opened in theaters in June. Despite being produced by Apple, it did not immediately make the jump to streaming on Apple TV — perhaps because it’s a big, loud movie that looks and sounds great on a big screen, and F1’s box office success reflects this. But now, Apple has announced when F1 will be coming in for a streaming pit stop, and it’s right before Christmas.

Apple announced on Monday that F1 will be available to stream on Apple TV beginning on December 12. (That same day, the company announced that their streaming service, Apple TV+, was being rebranded to just Apple TV.)

F1, which is directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), premiered on June 27, 2025, and was one of the biggest movies of the summer. Co-starring Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem, F1 earned more than $629 million worldwide at the box office. It’s one of the 10 highest-grossing movies of the year, and it’s the highest-grossing sports movie and the biggest live-action movie in Pitt’s filmography.

The movie was made available as paid video on demand on August 22, but December will be the first time that Apple TV subscribers can stream the film without paying a premium price for it.

Why Did F1 Take So Long to Come to Streaming?

Movie-watchers in the modern era of cinema have become increasingly conditioned to watch movies from the comfort of their couch, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise of streaming services. This is convenient for a busy (or lazy) person, but it’s not good for movie theaters or the studios that make the movies. Sending a movie straight to streaming—or having it be available to stream after a picture has only been in theaters for a few weeks—threatens to cannibalize the theatergoing audience. Why make the journey to a movie theater and buy a ticket when you could just pay to watch it at home?

F1, however, is a big blockbuster that plays great on a big screen. Moreover, it was a hit at the box office when it came out, indicating that people were indeed making the trip to go to the theater to see it. While Apple (and Warner Bros., who distributed the film) did make it available as VOD a mere month after it hit theaters, the movie was still enough of a hit that people did keep seeing it in theaters—or at the very least, pay a premium price to rent it at home. Only now that it’s been several months is Apple making it available for subscribers to stream for free.
