Some HGTV fans aren’t happy with Jonathan and Drew Scott‘s popular series, Celebrity IOU.
The series, which premiered in 2020, focuses on celebrities helping renovate one of their loved ones’ homes. Despite the show’s touching premise, there’s a number of HGTV viewers who believe it comes off patronizing, especially when said celebrities choose their employees for the home makeover. TV Insider reported that one HGTV viewer took to Reddit to share their issues with Celebrity IOU, which is currently in its 10th season, on August 6.
“Does anyone see Celebrity IOU as a bit tone deaf?” read the post, uploaded on the HGTV subreddit.
Several HGTV fans replied to the post in the comments section. For instance, one commenter wrote, “Always. So condescending.”
“A bit? That like saying the property bros are a bit overexposed. Yeah, its totally tone deaf,” added another.
Quite a few commenters also wrote that they didn’t believe some of the celebrity guests were being sincere while filming Celebrity IOU.
“I dislike the conceit that, ‘I always wanted to do something nice for her.’ Uh, you’ve been richer than your dear, dear lifelong friend for decades, what took you so long? Why fix up two rooms in a crappy house when you could move them to a new place?” wrote a commenter.
“I don’t know if tone deaf is the right wording. But I’ve always felt like it’s a massive clout grab by the celebrity. Kind of a ‘look at me’ thing. You know these people are definitely not doing something like this for the person off camera,” shared another.
“Im sure the stars mean well. if these folks have meant so much to the stars and consider them family why did it take so long for the stars to repay these folks. Doing it in a very boring t.v. seems fake to me. Yep, a bit condescending,” chimed in a third person.
That being said, some HGTV fans shared they believed several celebrities appeared genuine in their Celebrity IOU episodes.
“I really liked the episode withRosario Dawson and her lifelong friend from back in the day when they were struggling in showbiz together. It seemed really genuine to me,” commented a Reddit user.
“I will say I just watched the Shaun White one and he seemed really sweet and sincere about helping his friend,” wrote a different person.
“Ray Romano’s was the only one I watched where I didn’t feel like he was being an a——e. He seemed truly grateful for the person and just wanted to make her day better,” shared another.
Jonathan and Drew Scott, who began starring in several HGTV series in 2011, spoke about filming Celebrity IOU in an October 2022 interview with Access Hollywood. Jonathan said he enjoyed the series because of how emotional it is.
“What I love about Celebrity IOU is that every story is so different. There’s one guarantee is that you are going to ugly cry for every single one of them. Whether it’s Idina Menzel, whether it’s Terry Crews. I can’t even tell you, the fun, the laughter, the tears,” said Jonathan during the interview.
Drew also said he “love[d] the commitment from these celebrities to give back to people that they love.”
