Blyth is perhaps best remembered for her spellbinding performance in the 1945 cinematic classic Mildred Pierce. At just 16 years old she earned an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress by portraying Veda, the malicious and deceitful teenage daughter of Joan Crawford‘s titular character.
Directed by Michael Curtiz the film featured a dark dynamic where Veda fiercely competes with her mother for the affections of her stepfather, played by Zachary Scott. In a famously tense scene Blyth’s character strikes her mother across the face, prompting Crawford to deliver the iconic warning:
«Get out before I kill you.»
While Crawford ultimately won her only career Oscar for the film, Blyth’s spine-chilling portrayal as a film noir «daughter from hell» cemented her place in cinematic history. Film historian Alan Rode noted that while the movie belonged to Crawford, Ann Blyth acted as the true spine of the picture.

Following the massive critical and commercial success of Mildred Pierce Blyth’s career momentum temporarily stalled after she suffered a broken back in a severe tobogganing accident. However she eventually returned to the screen to showcase her impressive range in over 30 films between 1944 and 1957.
As a trained soprano she was a natural fit for the operatic stage and major film musicals such as Kismet in 1955 and The Student Prince in 1954. She also successfully ventured into lighter spectacles and comedies, including a memorable turn in Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid, and took on heavy dramatic roles like One Minute to Zero alongside Robert Mitchum.
Throughout her Hollywood tenure the petite brunette starred alongside a host of legendary leading men including Burt Lancaster, Mickey Rooney, Mario Lanza, Gregory Peck, Bing Crosby and Paul Newman.
Later life and legacy
After her final feature film appearance in The Helen Morgan Story in 1957, where the studio surprisingly insisted on dubbing her singing voice, Blyth occasionally graced the small screen. She took on select guest roles in popular television programmes ranging from The Twilight Zone in 1964 to Murder, She Wrote in 1985.
Born Ann Marie Blyth on 16 August 1928 in Mount Kisco, New York, she received early training as a singer and actress. Her Hollywood breakthrough initially came after a screen test while touring Los Angeles as a teenager with a Broadway theatre production.
Ann Blyth was married to James McNulty, who passed away in 2007, and the couple had five children together.
