Silver Lounge Restaurant sale: Community lines up to take home history

More than 60 people lined up outside Silver Lounge Restaurant and Uncle Bill’s Country Store in Falmouth on May 9 to say goodbye to the establishment.

  • A new seafood restaurant, Hooked Bar & Grill, is opening on Main Street in Falmouth.
  • The historic Hallet Store in Yarmouth Port continues to serve lunch, ice cream, and family-recipe chowder.
  • The Daily Brew Coffeehouse & Lounge in Falmouth is hosting two Nashville-themed music events this week.

In Cape Cod and the Islands restaurant news this week, neighbors are getting “Hooked” on a new Main Street seafood eatery slated to open Sept. 17 in Falmouth. And, in Yarmouth Port, we visit with the man who can be found making lunch most days at his family’s century-old store.

There is also news of visiting musicians from Nashville playing this week at The Daily Brew. And foodies may want to make a ferry reservation now for Nantucket’s Restaurant Week at the end of the month.

Also in food this week, we have results of our meatball poll. With 389 votes in, Colombo’s Cafe & Pastries earned a commanding 70% of the vote.

From the ICYMI (in case you missed it) department, we reported last week on a popular Brewster restaurant going on the market and on Snowy Owl Coffee Roasters flying down the street to a new location, not far from the original Brewster coffeehouse that opened 10 years ago. Husband-and-wife owners Shayna Ferullo and Manuel Ainzuain gave away hot and cold-brewed coffee to celebrate the Sept. 5 anniversary.

New restaurant, Hooked Bar & Grill, opens in Falmouth

After what seemed like months of anticipation ― and a couple of days of a soft opening with family and friends ― Hooked Bar & Grill announced it would open to the public Sept. 17.  The new restaurant is located at 153 Main St. in Falmouth.

“We can’t wait to check it out and support our new business neighbors. Come grab some yummy seafood at Hooked and stop by our store for coastal jewels while you’re downtown! They’re located to the immediate left if you’re walking into our shop,” wrote The Gilded Oyster in a Facebook post.

Hooked is in the building formerly occupied by Cupcake Charlie’s in Falmouth.

Blue Moon Sea Grille, Inc. d/b/a Hooked, reported in a separate Facebook post that it had received its liquor license and that guests were allowed to BYOB beer or wine to have with dinner for just a few days, until Friday, Sept. 19, when the bar at Hooked will be fully stocked and open for business.

Late last month, “Hooked” collected old fishing lures for two days. We can’t wait to see those in the decor.

Restaurant editor visits Hallet Store for chowder and blueberry ice cream

Charles Clark must say “My mother was a Hallet” a dozen times a day as he hustles around Hallet Store making sandwiches, scooping ice cream and dishing up history in the 136-year-old store at 139 Old King’s Highway in Yarmouth Port.

Oh, and we can’t forget the chowder: The family recipe has been professionally canned for years and you can still buy it ($19.95 for a quart of concentrate) from grocery shelves around Hallet’s. Just add milk or cream to make a creamy New England-style chowder. It is the one Clark serves at the luncheonette.

We enjoyed the chowder ($6.95 for a cup) with an overstuffed seafood salad sandwich ($9.95) that came with chips and a pickle.

I’m glad I saved room to try a cone from the old-fashioned ice cream counter because the blueberry ice cream ― with actual berries and ribbons of sweet blueberry ― was to die for. Clark said it’s no longer cost-efficient for him to make the ice cream as he once did, but he picks the flavors very carefully ― taste-testing the goods and using more than one supplier to get the best lineup.

The high-top stools at the ice cream bar have been taken out but there are a half-dozen tables at which to enjoy lunch or ice cream. I stopped by last week because on a few previous visits, Hallet’s Store had been closed.

Turns out that Clark, who runs the place himself, had knee surgery. But he is back in the store where he has worked for 50 years. Despite being busy, Clark offers up the store mascot ― a stuffed bear named Hadley ― for photos and sends most customers home with a piece of history in the form of a handwritten receipt from one of his ancestors’ battle with the town over changes to Route 6A. You can also buy a book about the Hallet Store’s time as the town’s first pharmacy and more.

“It’s so nice to see places like this, to go back in time to when we were kids and would get ice cream here,” said Priscilla (Gibbs) Balatgek, who grew up in Dennis but was visiting from her current home in New York.

Nashville comes to Martha’s Vineyard ― and Cape Cod

There are two country-themed shows this week as part of Behind the Curtain at The Daily Brew Coffeehouse & Lounge, 412 North Falmouth Highway in Falmouth. From 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 18, see the Nashville Hit Makers with a special homecoming by Paige Davis and performances by the Cape’s own Morgan Johnston and Brian Sances.

Then, from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, spend an “Evening with Nashville’s Rising Stars,” a group of songwriters in town for NEON Music Management’s 9th Annual Martha’s Vineyard Songwriters Festival. See thedailybrewlounge.com for tickets.

Nantucket Restaurant Week is Sept. 29-Oct. 5

Speaking of festivals, mark your calendars for Nantucket’s Restaurant Week, from Sept. 29-Oct. 5. More details are to follow but foodies may want to make some time to start thinking about reservations at one or more of the island’s highly awarded restaurants.
