ST. LOUIS – Halloween is creeping up around the corner, so you know what that means. Time to update that horror movie collection with some flicks that might hit a little too close to home.
Here are the top 10 horror movies that were set in Missouri, according to IMBD.
A spooky movie marathon always needs a good old-fashion psychological thriller, the “Red Dragon (2002)” was the first book to be released in the Hannibal Lector series. The film follows a retired FBI agent who is assigned to track down “The Tooth Fairy”, a mysterious serial killer.
Seeking a classic slasher film with a modern flair? “You’re Next (2011)” takes a peek into the Davison family home, where estranged siblings come together to celebrate their parents’ 35th wedding anniversary. Only, their joy is tainted by a mysterious murderer who attacks the family one-by-one.
“Mudhoney (1965)” follows an ex-convict who works on a farm in Missouri during the Great Depression. Once attraction begins to blossom between the ex-con and farmer’s niece, her abusive husband enlists help to gather a deadly mob.
Uban legends have been around for centuries, but the story of “The Empty Man (2020)” is like no other. The film follows a young girl who goes missing after performing a ritual to summon The Empty Man. When an ex-cop offers to help look for the young girl, his investigation leads to the discovery of something far more sinister than a legend.
The western horror film, “Eyes of Fire (1983),” takes a glimpse into the life of a preacher who is accused of adultery. When he and his followers are chased out of town, they become stranded in a haunted evil forest.
Missouri small towns are charming, close-knit and the perfect setting for a dark comedy slasher film. “Tragedy Girls (2017)” is a twisted film about two death-obsessed teenage girls using their online platform to talk about real-life tragedies surrounding a local serial killer. Unknown to the town, the murderers are on their phone screens.
Readers are in for a terrifyingly good laugh when watching “Ernest Scared Stupid (1991).” This family-friendly film follows Ernest after he accidentally unleashes an ugly troll that tries to transform children into wooden dolls in the fictional town of Briarville, Missouri.
In “Sometimes They Come Back (1991),” high school teacher Jim Norman returns to his hometown, where he is haunted by the childhood memory of his brother being murdered by a group of teenagers, who were all struck by a train. To Jim’s horror, students start dying off, and he discovers those same teenagers have returned and transferred into his class.
No surprise here, “Clown in a Cornfield (2025)” is set in decaying small town. The film follows along with Quinn and her father as they move into a dysfunctional community. As tensions between community members rise, a sinister clown emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one victim at a time.
The offbeat horror film “The Stylist (2020)” stars a lonely hair stylist who becomes obsessed with the lives of her clients. As her obsession grows, the film begins to take a dark, murderous turn.
