Emma Heming Willis is sharing the story of how she and husband Bruce Willis met — and why she was a “sweaty mess” when they first crossed paths in 2005.
Emma, 47, detailed their first encounter and how they eventually began dating in her new memoir, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
Emma first caught Bruce’s eye after a training session with celebrity trainer Gunnar Peterson, who also trained Bruce. After her workout at Peterson’s home gym, she spotted the fitness guru talking to two men: the Diehard star and his friend Stephen Ead, and she slightly panicked when Peterson called her over to introduce her.
“Sh–, I thought. I was a hot, sweaty mess and not really in the mood to meet anyone new,” she wrote. “But Gunnar was the ultimate connector, introducing everyone around him to one another. I had no choice but to walk over.”
Noting that the introduction was “quick,” Emma said that she left and that was that. However, Bruce’s version of their meet-cute was much more significant than she could have ever imagined.
“Was it love at first sight? No, not at all,” she wrote. “At the time, I was engaged. I didn’t think much of the interaction. When Bruce and I later discussed that first meeting, however, this was his point of view: When I walked out of the gym, he looked at Gunnar and said, ‘Who is that?!’ Then Gunnar called me over, made the introduction, which he would have anyway, and after I left, Bruce said, ‘I’m going to marry that girl one day.’”
Nearly four years later, that dream came true.
The pair wed on March 21, 2009, and as Emma wrote: “The rest is history.”
The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path is out now.
