Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance saw a major step in progress on Tuesday, February 10, after a person of interest was detained in a city south of Tucson, Arizona.
Authorities have been investigating Nancy’s whereabouts ever since the 84-year-old mother of Today star, Savannah Guthrie, was abducted from her home on Sunday, February 1. Some headway was finally made, leading to the suspect’s arrest. So far, it’s not clear why the person of interest was detained.
It’s not clear whether the person detained on Tuesday night was the same subject captured in the surveillance video that FBI Director Kash Patel shared with the public earlier that day.
The images, recovered from Nancy’s home security camera, captured a person wearing a ski mask and gloves, along with a backpack and appearing to have a gun holstered on their belt.
Late Tuesday night, following the detainment of a person of interest in the case, a spokesperson revealed that the FBI’s Evidence Response Team was assisting the Pima County Sheriff’s Department with a court-authorized search of a location in Rio Rico, Arizona.
It was reported that the search was related to Nancy’s investigation and that law enforcement would be at the location for many hours. Rio Rico, which is south of Tucson, is about 12 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
After news of the court-authorized search made headlines, CBS announced that local and federal authorities were actually searching the residence of the person of interest, who was detained in connection with Nancy’s disappearance.
Since Nancy vanished, Savannah, along with siblings Annie and Camron, has shared repeated videos pleading for the safe return of their mother and encouraging people to reach out to authorities with any tips.
Taking to Facebook, Savannah wrote in one plea for her mother’s safety, “Someone out there recognizes this person. We believe she is still out there. Bring her home. Anyone with information, please contact 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department 520-351-4900.”
