James Handy Cause of Death: What we know about the fatal stabbing of the ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ actor

Long before he was an Oscar-winner, an A-list actor found the inspiration to make his directorial debut in a haunting song from Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, and a personal link to The Boss himself.

Sean Penn appeared on the Soundtracking UK podcast, where he revealed that during a romance with Bruce Springsteen’s sister, Pam, he was first drawn to the song “Highway Patrolman” from Springsteen’s 1982 album, Nebraska. That haunting track would go on to inspire Penn’s 1991 directorial debut, The Indian Runner.

Penn recalled that he and Pam were in their early twenties when they lived together on the West Coast. At the time, the actor had never met Springsteen, already a rock legend thanks to his 1975 breakthrough album, Born to Run.

“One night, after several Heinekens and listening to [Nebraska], I said [to Pam], ‘I got to talk to your brother.’ [At the time] I think I had one movie that had come out [Taps], and Fast Times at Ridgemont High was going to come out,” the actor revealed.

“He had no idea who he was talking to,” Penn revealed. “This kid that’s dating his little sister, drunk on Heineken and waking him up at New Jersey at 3:30 in the morning asking, ‘Can I make a movie of that song [Highway Patrolman]?”

“Eight years later, I just went ahead and wrote it, and I called up Bruce and said, ‘Remember that guy, me, that was dating your sister?’ and I asked, ‘Would you read the script?’ And he read it and said, ‘Go for it.'”

The 1991 drama film, The Indian Runner, inspired by Springsteen’s song “Highway Patrolman,” marked Penn’s directorial debut. It starred David Morse as a small-town cop and Viggo Mortensen as his troubled brother.

Penn would go on to win two Best Actor Oscars for his roles in the films Mystic River (2003) and the biopic Milk (2008). Additionally, he would direct the films Into the Wild, The Pledge, and The Crossing Guard, to name a few.

From ‘Nebraska’ to ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere’

As of October 2025, Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska continues to inspire the film industry. The upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere goes behind the scenes of the creation of this seminal album.

According to the film’s press site, director Scott Cooper delves into Springsteen’s internal struggles while creating Nebraska. This took place during a crucial turning point in his career.

In the film, Springsteen struggles to “reconcile the pressures of success with the ghosts of his past. Recorded on a 4-track recorder in Springsteen’s New Jersey bedroom, the album marked a pivotal time in his life and is considered one of his most enduring works.”

Nebraska was Springsteen’s sixth album, following Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ, The Wild, the Innocent, & the E-Street Shuffle, Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, and The River. It placed just ahead of 1984’s Born to Run, according to Radio Times.

Starring Jeremy Allen White, Deliver Me From Nowhere delves into the singer/songwriter’s deeply personal and solitary process of creating Nebraska. The film is based on Warren Zanes’ book of the same name.

The film drops alongside the Nebraska ’82: Expanded Edition box set, according to Bruce Springsteen’s official website. It is packed with never-before-heard tracks and a full-album Blu-ray performance.

Deliver Me From Nowhere is set to release in theaters beginning October 24.
