Paul Anthony Kelly stepped onto the American Horror Story Season 13 set today, debuting a dramatic blond transformation that has quickly become one of the most talked-about aspects of his upcoming role.

After spending months embodying John F. Kennedy Jr. – a role where his dark, side-parted hair became one of his defining features – the actor is now almost unrecognisable with bleached blond hair, giving fans their clearest indication yet that he’s left that character firmly behind.

As he arrived on set in New York City, Kelly embraced the new look in a vintage Slayer band T-shirt, relaxed charcoal trousers, beige trainers and dark sunglasses.
The rock-inspired tee felt perfectly suited to the eerie world of American Horror Story. Whether it was simply an off-duty wardrobe choice or a subtle reflection of his new character, it only added to the intrigue surrounding his role the series.
Later in the day, Kelly was photographed filming alongside Sarah Paulson in a sharp leather trench coat, crisp white shirt and burgundy tie, completing a transformation that couldn’t feel further removed from John F. Kennedy Jr.
I love seeing this kind of transformation from a young actor. After a breakout role as John F. Kennedy Jr., it would have been easy for Kelly to become associated with clean-cut leading men. Instead, this dramatic change suggests he’s keen to show his range from the outset.
For decades, dark hair was often used to signal the villain, while blond hair was associated with the clean-cut hero. Lately, however, that visual shorthand has been turned on its head. Nicholas Hoult embraced blond hair as Lex Luthor during the Superman press tour, and now Paul Anthony Kelly has undergone his own striking transformation for American Horror Story.
Whether Kelly keeps the blond hair for the American Horror Story press tour remains to be seen, but if he does, it could become just as much a talking point as the role itself.
