Once a decorated member of the Navy and a respected member of the royal family, Andrew is now starting his new life as a commoner after decades of scandals and controversies
How Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor went from a Prince to a disgraced member of the Firm, after being embroiled in countless controversies for almost two decades
- Andrew was reportedly introduced to Jeffrey Epstein in 1999 through a mutual friend, Ghislaine Maxwell.
- It was just two years later in 2001 that Virginia Giuffre claims she was first sexually assaulted by Andrew in Epstein’s London home. Giuffre alleged she was assaulted twice more by the former prince, once at Epstein’s New York home and again at an “orgy” on his private island in the Caribbean when she was 17. Andrew has strenuously denied these allegations.
- Allegations that Andrew had sex with Giuffre emerge in court documents in Florida related to Epstein. They say she was forced to have sex with him when she was 17 after being trafficked by the paedophile financier. Andrew denies the claims.
- In November 2019, Andrew sits down for an interview with BBC’s Newsnight to clear his name, which spectacularly backfires. As a result of the disastrous interview, Andrew steps back from public duties “for the foreseeable future”.
- Andrew was stripped of a range of military affiliations and royal patronages by the Queen in January 2022 as the fallout from the Newsnight interview continued.
- After living in exile for several years, court documents were unsealed by a US judge in January 2024 which include several accusations against Andrew, from groping a woman’s breast in an alleged encounter involving a puppet version of the prince, to claims he had sex with an underage Giuffre. The 1,200 pages were gathered for Giuffre’s 2015 defamation case against Ghislaine Maxwell.
- In December 2024, an alleged Chinese spy who befriended Andrew is named as the businessman Yang Tengbo. A high court hearing had revealed that Tengbo, who was banned from the UK, was said to have been a “close” confidant of Andrew. In a statement, Andrew’s office says he stopped all contact with the man, whom he had met through “official channels”, with “nothing of a sensitive nature ever discussed”.
- A damning biography was released in August 2025 by royal expert Andrew Lownie. It claimed Andrew had known Epstein for a decade earlier than 1999. According to the book, compromising material on Andrew may allegedly have been passed to Israel’s Mossad secret service, Saudi Arabian authorities and Muammar Gaddafi’s Libyan intelligence services by Epstein. Compromising material on Andrew may also have ended up in Russian hands, according to Lownie.
- In October 12 2025, a newly leaked email showed that Andrew told Epstein “we are in this together” after a picture of the British royal with his arm around a teenage Virginia Giuffre was first published in 2011, contradicting his claim that he has ceased contact with Epstein.
- Just five days later, several titles and honours, including the Duke of York title, were given up by Andrew as a result of continued accusations made against him relating to his relationship with Epstein. He said the allegations against him – which he again denied – were distracting from the work of the royal family.
- On October 30 2025, Andrew lost his style, title and honours, now becoming known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. The palace also says Andrew has been served formal notice to surrender his lease on Royal Lodge . A statement from the Palace said that the move was deemed necessary despite “the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him”, and that their thoughts and sympathies remain with the survivors of any and all forms of abuse.
- In November 2025, the former prince refused to answer calls from US lawmakers investigating Epstein’s criminal network of “co-conspirators and enablers.”
