“Wildwood” is based on Colin Meloy’s novels and directed by Travis Knight from a script by Chris Butler. Meloy is the frontman of Portland-based band the Decemberists, and the book is set in Portland, so the material is a natural for the Portland-based Laika.
“Colin’s book ‘Wildwood’ is really inseparable from place,” says producer Sam Wilson. “Forest Park, which is one of the largest urban forests in the U.S., is actually the Wildwood of the book. So it’s rooted in the real world.”
