Jennifer Lopez has been single for over a year since she filed for divorce from Ben Affleck, and it has been a transformative time in the actress’s life, sources told Us Weekly. Lopez, who has spent most of her adult life in relationships, is enjoying being on her own and putting her energy into her career.
“She’s learning that she’s stronger alone,” one insider said. “She’s enjoying the freedom and feels liberated [to make] decisions without compromise.”
“After everything that went on in her personal life, she’s focused on doing what she loves most, which is performing and creating,” a second source added. Lopez is currently promoting Kiss of the Spider Woman, filming The Last Mrs. Parrish, preparing for a Las Vegas residency, and working on new music.
A third source echoed that sentiment: “She doesn’t have anybody to think about romantically, which is working for her and keeping her focused. Being single is really working for her in that respect.”
The second source shared more details on her dynamic with Affleck, who was a producer on Kiss of the Spider Woman. The star has no interest in giving their romance a third go. “She’s accepted [her relationship with Ben] ran its course,” the insider said, noting it took time for her to recover from their breakup.
These days, “Jen feels more comfortable in her skin than ever,” the source added. “There’s a sense of independence and peace about her. She’s in a really good headspace right now.”
She and Affleck remain cordial, the second source noted: “There’s still a lot of love between them, but they both understand they shouldn’t be married. There is no ‘So-and-so did this’ or ‘This was the big event.’”
At this point, “they all try to maintain some type of normalcy after divorce,” the source added of their families. “The transition was tough for everyone, but they’ve made an effort to stay connected and still spend time together.”
The third source shed more light on Affleck and Lopez’s relationship now, saying it’s no longer “deep.”
“[She] doesn’t really keep in touch with Ben,” the insider said. “She’s more likely to keep in touch with the kids [Jennifer Garner and Affleck’s three children, Violet, Fin, and Samuel]; that was very genuine.”
Lopez recently spoke on the Howard Stern Show about how her divorce from Affleck has been a huge blessing in hindsight.
“When I got divorced this last time, it was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she began. “It really made me journey into…I mean, I had a religious coach, a therapist, a couple’s therapist, an individual therapist. I had a coach to understand addiction. I had everything. I was like, ‘I’m gonna figure this shit out if it kills me.’’’
“It really got to the point where I go, ‘Oh, the core of the thing is you. It’s nobody else,’” she continued. “And when I did that, now I’m able to sit here in a more self-assured, self-aware way. The things that have happened to me…whether [it’s about] my mother, my father…how I learned to love, how I felt neglected—all the things that are in your head as a person. I know who I am, and I just really appreciate that person and feel really comfortable and good in being myself—all the good parts and all of the complicated things.”
