Kate Middleton’s solo visit to Italy acted as a huge triumph for the British Royal Family.

After a year prioritizing her health, the Princess of Wales returned to full-time royal duties in 2025. However, she hadn’t made her first major solo international visit until now.

On May 13, Kate traveled to Reggio Emilia, Italy for a two-day working trip on behalf of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. She visited preschools and met with educators, children and parents to study the “Reggio Emilia approach” to early-years education. On the last day of her trip, she joined a pasta making class.

Her trip to Italy acted as a “clear signal she is back in business,” according to Queen Elizabeth II’s former press secretary Ailsa Anderson. Kate’s milestone was just as important to her as it was for the rest of the family.

“At the point the King went to America, the main theme was the fragility of the monarchy — and the fragility of the two of them,” Catherine Mayer, author of the upcoming Divide and Rule, said to People. “If you have the sense of them both fully back — doing it well — that shifts the perception.”

While speaking to the Daily Mail, a source said Kate gained some “mental clarity” throughout the process and this has affected her views on priorities.

They explained, “She’s quite strict now at working out what she needs to be at and what she doesn’t.”

Luckily, her “lifelong commitment for HRH” has not faltered. While she took a backseat role to public engagements, she was still very present for matters dealt within the confines of Buckingham Palace.

“Even if they aren’t seeing her in public, she is very hands-on behind the scenes with the team in the office. She has her own projects to pursue, such as her early years initiative,” they continued.
