How“ Supergirl” ‘perfectly tees her up’ for “Man of Tomorrow”

Key Points

  • Supergirl director Craig Gillespie explains that the film “perfectly tees her up” for Man of Tomorrow.

  • “She’s really gone through a learning process on this one,” he says.

  • Alcock says she’s filming Man of Tomorrow at the same time as Supergirl press.

This article contains spoilers from Supergirl.

Supergirl doesn’t end with a flashy post-credits scene to tee up the next DC Studios movie. (Many of us already know how the head honcho, James Gunn, feels about post-credits scenes.) And yet, in the eyes of the film’s director, Craig Gillespie, “Her journey perfectly tees her up for what’s gonna be the next film for James.”

That would be Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to 2025’s Superman. Milly Alcock is set to reprise her role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl alongside David Corenswet as Kal-El/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathon Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

Adria Arjona, Matthew Lillard, and Sinqua Walls also joined the cast.

“I’m filming it at the same time as doing this,” Alcock tells Entertainment Weekly earlier this month, referring to the press tour for Supergirl (now playing in theaters). “I was in Atlanta the other day. I’m just riding the wave…I don’t have a choice.”

According to Gillespie, Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow “perfectly segue together.”

Rather than a final tag that points to what’s ahead, Supergirl ends on a quiet conversation between Kara and her strongman cousin at his apartment in Metropolis. He mentions how he “could’ve used your help on this last guy.” She then confirms, “Think I’m gonna stay awhile this time.”

“The comic book [Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow] was kind of its own standalone, but it’s amazing how well it’s weaved its way into their relationship and how that will work as a trilogy,” Gillespie says of the Kara-Kal relationship. “She’s really gone through a learning process on this one, and now she gets to go back and have that relationship with Superman from a different place.”

Man of Tomorrow, set for theaters on July 9, 2027, is part of what Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, refers to as his “Super-Family” saga with Superman and Supergirl. The story will force the Man of Steel and his mortal enemy, Luthor, to strike an uneasy alliance when a much larger threat emerges.

Gunn, returning as writer and director on the film, described Brainiac, an alien A.I., as “what happens when intelligence loses ALL connection to humanity. And Superman is as human as anyone, so…I get why they have beef.”

As production kicked off and the paparazzi swarmed the shooting location, Gunn shared a first-look image of Hoult’s Luthor wearing his comics-accurate green warsuit.

“It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,” Gunn said on an earlier appearance on Howard Stern. “I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”

In the meantime, Supergirl is now playing in theaters.
