Key Points
Every Year After is an adaptation of Carley Fortune’s book Every Summer After.
In its season 1 finale, the series sets up a potential season 2 based around another of Fortune’s books.
Here’s how that major cliffhanger could lead to something wonderful.
This article contains spoilers from the season 1 finale of Every Year After, “Goodbye…”
It might finally be time for Charlie’s (Michael Bradway) love story … if he survives, that is.
Although Every Year After‘s season 1 finale delivered a happy ending for Sam (Matt Cornett) and Percy (Sadie Soverall), the same can’t be said for Sam’s older brother. While Sam and Percy were busy reconnecting at Barry’s Bay, Charlie was focusing on work. At least until the lake came back to more or less slap him in the face.
As Charlie stood inside his boss’ office, he recognized a photo on the wall. His boss claimed that his wife bought it at a gallery, but what’s strange is that it’s a photo of Charlie, Percy, and Sam on the lake in a yellow boat. Looking at that photo, and struggling with the way he and Percy hurt Sam, Charlie seemingly has a heart attack as he falls to the floor while clutching his chest.

But book fans were probably a bit more focused on something else: Charlie can’t die, because that photo is the key to his love story.
Every Year After is an adaptation of author Carley Fortune’s book Every Summer After, but Every Summer After isn’t Fortune’s only book that takes place within the world of Barry’s Bay. In 2025, the author released One Golden Summer, which follows a photographer — get it? — named Alice as she returns to the lake and finds romance with one of the guys from a photo she took years earlier. And by incorporating Alice’s photo into the season finale, the series is setting up Charlie and Alice’s story should it get renewed for season 2.

As showrunner Amy B. Harris previously told Entertainment Weekly, “I see five seasons. Obviously, there’s another book that’s connected to Barry’s Bay that I think will be a very exciting blueprint for us for a potential season 2.”
Perhaps Charlie can recover from his medical emergency … at the lake?
Every Year After season 1 is streaming now on Prime Video.
