Netflix’s latest blockbuster documentary — “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish” — has taken the internet by storm since dropping on Aug. 29, leaving audiences reeling over its big “whodunit” reveal.

Before the wildly popular documentary, however, was the dramatized version of the same case produced by Lifetime, called “Mommy Meanest.”
Released in 2024, the movie was “inspired by” the story of the Licari family, the subjects of “Unknown Number,” as well as “similar cases,” according to Lifetime. It stars Lisa Rinna (of “Days of Our Lives” and “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” fame) and Briana Skye.

What happened in the Kendra Licari case?
In 2020, the small town of Beal City, Michigan, was shaken to its core when teenagers Lauryn Licari and her then-boyfriend, Owen, began receiving threatening and sexually explicit text messages from an unknown number.
After a brief pause, the messages resumed in September 2021 and escalated into thousands of vile and threatening text messages sent over the next 15 months. The messages contained information only someone close to Lauryn would have known, throwing a twist into the mystery.
Police began their investigation by focusing on Lauryn and Owen’s classmates and friends. When the investigation stalled, the FBI eventually traced the messages to Lauryn’s mother, Kendra Licari.
In December 2022, Kendra Licari was arrested and charged with five counts, including stalking a minor and obstruction of justice, ABC News and Today reported at the time. Licari pleaded guilty to two counts of stalking a minor and was sentenced to 19 months to five years in prison, from which she was released on parole on Aug. 8, 2024, as previously reported by USA TODAY.
