Holy Redeemer and Wilkes-Barre Area both advanced in their respective classes in the District 2 boys’ volleyball playoffs.
Tijan Njai had eight digs and 28 assists, including the 1,000th of his career, as No. 3 Wilkes-Barre Area swept No. 6 West Scranton, 3-0 (25-12. 25-16. 25-8) in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A bracket.
Matthew Clark added 17 kills for Wilkes-Barre Area, and Brian Fowler had 18 service points and 10 digs.
The Wolfpack advance to Tuesday’s semifinals at Hazleton Area to face off with No. 2 Abington Heights. The other semifinals will be No. 1 Hazleton Area and No. 4 Delaware Valley.
Class 2A
Holy Redeemer 3, Western Wayne 0: At Holy Redeemer, Jack Wasiakowski had 18 points and 23 assists, and Jack McCue had 11 kills and three digs to lead No. 2 seed Holy Redeemer over No. 7 seed Western Wayne, 25-8, 25-11 and 25-12.
Koirey Tang had eight kills and three blocks for Holy Redeemer. Brandon DelBalso had five kills and four blocks, while Ben Shupp had seven points.
Redeemer advances to Tuesday’s semifinals at Crestwood to face off with No. 3 Valley View, a winner over Nanticoke Area. The other semifinal will be No. 1 Crestwood and No. 4 North Pocono. Crestwood was a 3-0 winner over Dallas Thursday. Set scores were 25-14, 25-10 and 25-7.
Valley View 3, Nanticoke Area 0: At Valley View, Zack Zubritski had eight kills and 11 digs, while Brayden Isaacs had 16 assists for Nanticoke Area in a loss to Valley View, 25-10, 25-12, 25-16.
Ethan Yendrzeiwski had seven kills and four blocks for Nanticoke Area, and Seth Piontkowski had four blocks and four kills.
Jagger Roe had 12 kills and two service aces for Valley View. Luke Stevens added seven kills, five digs, and three aces, and Rocco Farina had 18 digs and nine service points for the Cougars.
Baseball
Williamsport 12, Holy Redeemer 1: At Wilkes, leading by one run going to the top of the fourth, Williamsport scored 10 runs to pull away from the Royals in a nonleague game.
Deshaun White had a triple and two RBIs for Williamsport, while Jaxson March had two singles and two RBIs. Giovanni White singled, scored one run, and drove in one.
Sam Shovlin and Reilly Hossage each had a single for Holy Redeemer.
Pittston Area 19, Nanticoke Area 2: At Berwick, Josh Barr had a double and three RBIs, while Beau Widdick and Dom Salvo each had two hits and one RBI to lead the Patriots over Nanticoke Area.
Zach Budzak had a single and two RBIs, while Alex Rosencrance had a single and two RBIs. Dominic Cocco pitched all three innings to get the win. He allowed four hits and struck out two. Pittston Area led 7-2 going to the top of the third when it scored 12 runs.
Dylon Ball had two hits and one RBI for Nanticoke Area. Sa’id Martinez and Gavin Higgins each had a single.
Mount Carmel 3, Hazleton Area 0: At Hazleton Area, locked in a scoreless tie through the first six innings, Mount Carmel broke through for three runs in the top of the seventh to win the nonleague game.
The Cougars were held to two hits, singles by Dom Marino and Angel DeJesus.
Jaylen Delaney had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs for Mount Carmel. Jason Klokis had a single and scored one run.
Wyoming Area 15, Tunkhannock 2: At The Atlas Complex, Jake Snyder had two hits, including a triple, and scored three runs, and Robbie Yatsko had a single and three RBIs in Wyoming Area’s win over the Tigers.
Zach Smith had a single and two RBIs, while Bruno Pizzano had a single and three RBIs. Marco Altavilla pitched the first four innings, allowing two hits and striking out four to get the win.
Hunter Gilroy had a single and RBI for Tunkhannock. Aiden Mislevy had a single.
