As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, members of the public are now trying to intervene and crowd-fund to satisfy a demand for cryptocurrency in exchange for information.
A GoFundMe has been launched by a resident of Tucson, Arizona, Shawn Breeden, to help the Guthrie family bring Nancy, 84, home. Titled “Help Find Nancy Guthrie,” the page has the aim of using donations to buy the bitcoin that an email sent to news outlet TMZ demanded in order to supply information they claim to have regarding Nancy’s suspected kidnapper.
An unidentified individual has sent multiple emails to TMZ demanding 1 bitcoin in exchange for the identity of what they referred to as the “main” individual who is holding Nancy captive. The sum equates to around $65,000, while the FBI is currently offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to the discovery of Nancy or her kidnappers.
Breeden has pledged that after the donations are received and the bitcoin payment made, any remaining funds will be sent to the FBI or local police to help cover the costs of the ongoing investigation. However, at the time of writing, the page has raised only $660 from 25 donations, leaving a significant gap to reach the $65k target.
Part of the public’s reluctance to donate could be the substantial earnings of Nancy’s famous Today anchor daughter, Savannah Guthrie. Meanwhile, TMZ has suggested to the person behind the emails that they send the information they hold privately, for them to pass it to law enforcement.
The outlet suggested that this would provide a public record of their responsibility for Nancy’s being found and therefore ensure they were entitled to the $100,000 reward offered by the FBI, which would be substantially more than the value of 1 bitcoin.
Meanwhile, investigators are hoping that DNA that was recently recovered from a glove found two miles from Nancy’s home and believed to belong to the suspect in her kidnapping could lead to a break in the case. The DNA is currently being run through the FBI’s CODIS database, in the hope that a match will provide new leads.
Nancy vanished from her home in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood of Tucson, Arizona, in the early hours of February 1. She had been to dinner with her daughter, Annie Guthrie, and son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, at their home nearby. Nancy was last seen around 9:48 pm on Saturday, January 31, when she was dropped off at home by family who said she entered the property via her garage door.
Her doorbell camera was found to have disconnected at 1:47 am on February 1. At 2:12 am, the camera detected movement, and the FBI provided images of a subject of interest tampering with the device. They were seen on the camera wearing a mask with what appeared to be a gun holstered to their belt.
By 2:28 am, Nancy’s pacemaker disconnected from her Apple watch, indicating it was no longer in range. Blood spatter found on her porch was then confirmed to be Nancy’s.
