The Royals announced they have placed reliever Hunter Harvey on the Injured List with a right adductor strain and have called up right-hander Luinder Avila from Triple-A Omaha.
Harvey rejoined the team in late July after missing 15 weeks with a right major teres sprain in his back. He has not allowed a run in 12 appearances this year, striking out 11 in 10.2 innings with one walk. Since the Royals acquired him from the Nationals last July, he has made just 18 appearances. Harvey is eligible for free agency after the year.
Avila is a 23-year-old Venezuelan right-hander ranked as the #14 prospect in the farm system by MLB Pipeline. They write he has a fastball at “94-95 mph with flashes of the upper 90s, and the pitch has natural cut and ride”, as well as a curve as his out pitch, and a developing change-up. He had a 4.67 ERA with 51 K and 19 walks in 44.1 innings as a starter for Omaha. Avila was already on the 40-man roster, so no further roster moves are needed.
