Rachel Sennott is stepping into her It girl era. The actor, writer, and comedian—best known for Bottoms and Shiva Baby—takes the lead both on screen and behind the scenes with I Love LA, a sharply funny and self-aware look at ambition, friendship, and internet fame.

Sennott stars as Maia, an employee at a Los Angeles talent management company whose life is upended when her estranged best friend, Tallulah (Odessa A’zion), now a successful influencer, re-enters her life. What begins as a career opportunity quickly turns chaotic, as Maia signs Tallulah to impress her boss (Leighton Meester) and tumbles deeper into the endless cycle of seeking online validation. The show follows Maia and her crew—Charlie (Jordan Firstman), Alani (True Whitaker), and Dylan (Josh Hutcherson)—as they navigate twenty-something life under the algorithm.

“It’s Entourage for internet It girls,” Sennott told ELLE in her recent digital cover story. “I’ve yet to see the internet captured as the business that it is. I wanted it to exist in the show in the way it does in real life—reacting and responding without copying what’s already happened.”

Sennott called the cast “genius” in her ELLE interview, adding, “I genuinely feel so lucky to have every single person we do. With Josh, you understand he doesn’t get it, but he cares about Maia and the things that matter to her. And Leighton—she blows me away. She’s so fucking funny.”

How many episodes are in I Love LA season 1?

Season 1 of I Love LA will include eight episodes. The series marks Sennott’s debut as a creator and executive producer, as well as her first time directing; she helmed the season finale herself.

“I think I loved it,” she said of stepping behind the camera. “There were moments where I was like, ‘This is incredible, I’m in the flow,’ and then moments where I was like, ‘I’m going to fucking die.’”

When do new episodes drop?

New episodes of I Love LA will premiere Sundays at 10:30 P.M. ET/PT on HBO Max. Here’s the full release schedule:

  • Episode 8 (Finale): December 21
