A former Royal butler who served King Charles has indicated that the monarch would view likely Meghan Markle‘s Remembrance Day post favourably.
Grant Harrold served the King from 2007 to 2011, during his time as Prince of Wales. He suggested that the now-monarch would welcome Meghan’s acknowledgement of veterans, particularly considering Prince Harry‘s own military background.
In conversation with ReachPlc, Grant discussed Meghan’s decision to share footage of her husband in military uniform on Veterans Day in the United States. The post was accompanied by the caption: “As my husband says, ‘Once served. Always serving.’
“Thank you to all who served, sacrificed, and continue to serve. Honoring you on Veterans Day and every day.”
Considering Meghan’s choice to publish the footage and its potential effect on Harry’s father, Grant indicated that he believed it would not create any difficulties, reports the Mirror.
Grant said: “It’s a very powerful video, and a very emotive post. It’s definitely showing Meghan’s move to a more ‘celebrity’ approach to social media, sharing the video she wants and feels are important on key days.
“It’s a really nice post. I don’t think the Royal Family will feel badly about it at all, I think they will approve it.
“She’s marking Veterans Day – which is America’s version of Remembrance Day – and showing her pride in the active service her husband undertook.
“The King was extremely proud of his son serving in Afghanistan, and he will be glad at Meghan acknowledging and respecting this.”
Meghan Markle highlighted Harry’s military service in a video, while the Prince himself penned an essay to commemorate Remembrance Day. The Independent reports that in his essay, Harry emphasised the purpose of the annual memorial, recognising the sacrifices made both in the past and present.
Harry wrote: “Remembrance has never been about glorifying war. It’s about recognising its cost: the lives changed forever and the lessons paid for, through unimaginable sacrifice. It’s also about honouring those who, knowing that cost, still choose to serve.
“Earlier this year, I was invited to Ukraine (Slava Ukraini!) to spend time with friends at the Superhumans centre, where men and women are rebuilding their lives after devastating injuries.
“Though currently I may live in the United States, Britain is, and always will be, the country I proudly served and fought for.”
Prince Harry‘s military career spanned from 2005 to 2015, including two tours to Afghanistan. During this time, the Duke of Sussex rose to the rank of captain and qualified as an Apache Aircraft Commander.
This period also marked the launch of the Invictus Games by Harry, a competition designed to support injured, sick, and wounded military personnel worldwide.
Over the past decade, Invictus has provided support to hundreds of military personnel globally and raised awareness of the importance of post-service care for veterans.
